As at the time of this report if you make a Google search on website ‘Rap Genius‘, don’t expect it to pop up on any page of the search results. Strange right? Not really.
Google has blacklisted the popular lyrics site for trying to boost its search rankings using Justin Bieber links.
It apparently all started when Rap Genius used a spam SEO scheme by posting a message on Facebook asking bloggers to become affiliates. If the bloggers promoted Rap Genius’s Google ranking by linking to its coverage of a new Justin Bieber album, Rap Genius would promote their blogs on social media. Cheeky right?
Google was not impressed to say the least. The thing is, the more links directed to a website, the bigger it gets and higher it appears in search results. Google feels Rap Genius were cheating.
So as a counter act, almighty Google blacklisted the site; you practically can’t see a thread of Rap Genius’ links on any Google search result, not even with a query as popular as ‘Kendrick Lamar Swimming pools rap genius’! The website’s traffic has plummeted.
Although reports have it that the website is currently in talks with Google for a resolution, the company through their Twitter says they will be fine. We don’t think so…
Rap Genius was created in October 2009 by founders Mahbod Moghadam, Tom Lehman, and Ilan Zechory, who met during their undergraduate years at Yale University.
